Do you have any information regarding the first Saint Cecilia church? It was a simple wood structure, erected at 4117 Hamilton Street (Walnut Hill/Orchard Hill districts just beyond Bemis Park). Its first service was December 2, 1888. Because of the small number of Catholics in that area, northwest of the city, mostly rural, there were monthly services. The structure was physically relocated on 40th Street, one block south of Cuming Street, in 1903/1904. It served the Catholic presence in that place, at the head of Page Street, until it was destroyed in November, 1917, when scaffolding used to erect the south bell tower of the present Cathedral was blown over, onto the old church. The only place for Catholics to gather on Sundays was the recently enclosed “new Cathedral”. From that point onward services have been continuous held to the present.

Never been hungry. Do you have any photos or other information about the Fontenelle Chapel that we think was near 24th and Clark (maybe 20th and Clark?). A friend’s parents were the ministers there from about 68 to 70, and we tried to find it today and could not; and surprisingly can find no information about it online anywhere. Thanks for any help.

Hi Myron, and thanks for your note. I found a little bit and added it to the article. The church was established in 1950 by the Krimmer Mennonite Brethren Conference. It was at N. 20th and Clark Streets, and stayed there until 1968 when it moved to south Omaha and took a new name. That congregation is still going, and you can find their history at https://faithbibleomaha.com/church-history/
